UNICEF Ambassador Shakira strikes a chord with girls from Udaipur
UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Shakira met today with a group of adolescent girls from impoverished parts of the country to discuss the importance of educating and empowering girls to break the cycle of poverty and inequity – nationally and globally.
As Shakira made her entry into the State Training Institute in Udaipur, 11 year old Deepika, studying at the Kasturba Gandhi Ballika Vidyalaya ( KGBV), exclaimed with wonder in her eyes, “ I don’t believe that I am finally meeting her and also getting a chance to tell her about my life”… “I have been dreaming of this ever since I was told that she would be visiting Udaipur.”
KGBV (Kasturba Gandhi Ballika Vidyalas) is a residential educational programme for girls and addresses the issue of girls’ education for the most disadvantaged girls who are marginalized and difficult to reach. UNICEF is working closely with the Government of Rajasthan to support the KGBV’s.
