13 September, 2007, Bhopal: The Bhopal office of UNICEF will now have an art-photo gallery. The gallery, dedicated to showcasing art and photography on social themes, was inaugurated on Thursday 13 September by Mr. Prashant Mehta, Principal Secretary, Women and Child development. The photographic works of Prakash Hatvalane were exhibited at the new gallery.
Inaugurating the gallery Mr. Mehta said it was a unique concept and appreciated the initiative to use the work of artists to influence social change in favor of children and women.
Dr. Hamid El Bashir, M.P. State Representative for UNICEF said that art was an excellent medium to question many of society’s deepest entrenched customs and beliefs and could serve to challenge our conscious or unconscious social constructions.
The exhibition was attended by, amongst others, Dr Rashmi Dwivedi, Head, Department Paediatrics, Gandhi Medical College; Dr Sheela Bhambal, State Coordinator - breastfeeding promotion network of India; Dr Swati Chandorkar, Director, State Resource Centres, senior people from media, representative of international agencies, NGOs and UNICEF staff members. Students of fine arts from MLB College were also present at the event.
Prakash Hatvalane, a photo journalist for past two decades has worked for national and international media. His exhibits include paintings of his collection of Ramanami sects and his work with children, women and tribes. His photographs will be on display till September 22, 2007. The exhibition is at UNICEF office and will be open daily till 7 pm and on Saturdays from 9.30 am till 3.00 pm.
