CHALO KUCH SEEKHEN: Come on, let’s learn something new

The peer educators had an opportunity to build their skills, and enhance their understanding on a diverse range of topics during the ‘Chalo Kuch Seekhen’ – (Come on, let’s learn something new) skill building workshops held at the National Convention of Peer Educators, Bangalore, May 28th to 30th 2008.  Eleven skills building workshops were conducted with a maximum of 30 participants per workshop on two mornings of the convention for approximately 2 hours each.  Peer educators chose two skill building workshops for each of the two days in the participant registration form so that each one had an opportunity to participate in two different workshops during the convention. 

Below is a brief description of each skill building workshop conducted along with the names of the resource persons and artistic groups involved.  All of the learning’s from these workshops were presented, displayed, enacted or performed either at the live market place and/ or at the cultural evenings. 

Workshop 1
Theatre – An effective means of communication
Conducted by: Darpana Academy, Gujarat

This workshop involved the peer educators in creating songs, skits and slogans related to HIV/AIDS and development issues. Participatory theatre games were taken up and guidance was provided on how to use/operate puppets in their area of work. 

Workshop 2
Photo documentation – Telling stories through photographs
Conducted by Anirban Dutta and Soniya Bharat

The workshop oriented peer educators to the art and science of photography and introduced them to the world of cameras. Sharing case studies and photo essays, the workshop resulted in a greater understanding amongst peer educators of the powerful impact of photos.

Workshop 3
Communication skills for HIV & AIDS
Conducted by Dr Thelma Sequeira and Digambar Ghodke

This workshop helped in enhancing the skills of peer educators in communicating effectively for HIV and AIDS. Simple participatory and interactive games and exercises shared by the peers enabled them to be more effective and sensitive in their work with HIV and AIDS among different vulnerable groups and the community.

Workshop 4
Working with communities on HIV & AIDS
Conducted by Ismail Shaikh and Shanoo

The workshop helped in enhancing the skills of peer educators in initiating a community dialogue on HIV and AIDS.  Being a sensitive topic, one often faces challenges to put into words issues around HIV and AIDS in the community setting. This workshop taught the different information communication techniques and strategies especially the participatory methods that would help the peers to work with communities on addressing HIV and AIDS.

Workshop 5
Pantomime Theatre
Conducted by Arijit Roy and Jagran team

The workshop introduced the various aspects of mime and silent theater with coloured faces and facial expressions as an effective mode of communication.  Based around a theme, elaborate story lines were created leading to joint improvisations and small solo presentations by the peer educators with the Jagran team to enhance their own creativity and expression. 

The peer educators showcased their work using pantomime at the live market place and cultural evening.

Workshop 6
Conducted by Ranjit Rajput

The workshop helped in enhancing the skills of peer educators in creating beautiful rangoli designs. Rangoli is a combination of different colours and shapes drawn on the floor, using naturally prepared pigments, powders and pastes of colour. Peer educators from the northern and southern states learned and exchanged the unique designs, and techniques involved to creatively design and display some of their works around the issues of youth and HIV.

Workshop 7
Paper and canvas painting
Conducted by Pravin Patil

The workshop helped in enhancing the skills of peer educators in painting on paper and canvas. Peer educators are often involved in creating posters, wall paintings as well as creating slogans and banners for their red ribbon club and community events. This workshop provided tips in painting and using paints creatively to convey messages on HIV to make an impact.

Workshop 8
Community Newsletter
Conducted by Namita Koshy

The workshop was to enhance the skills of peer educators in writing and to compose a newsletter for sharing in the community setting.  Many peers are already involved in creating newsletters for their red ribbon clubs and to share experiences and information through hand written wallpapers etc. This workshop enabled the peers to be more creative and effective while designing community newsletters. Few of the peers from this group also had an opportunity to work for the convention newsletter.

Workshop 9
Collage – Poster making
Conducted by Vijay Sylas

A collage is a visual medium of information. It makes use of lots of pictures and slogans to visually represent ideas and create an impact that stimulates the thinking process. An effective collage is one that communicates the exact idea as brought by the author /designer. It is particularly effective as it transports the audience to reality graphically.  The peer educators had a chance to create their own collages and posters enabling them to be more effective while communicating ideas and information in the community.

Workshop 10
Clay modeling and doll making
Conducted by Yashoda Pradhan and Shreya Ghosh

Clay has been conventionally used to make useful objects. It has been increasingly used as an effective means of expression. Along with drawing, painting, drama and music the new form of therapy is clay modeling.  During the workshop, peers worked with clay to create various objects, perhaps with a story to communicate more effectively on various topics related to youth and HIV.

Workshop 11
Kite Making – messaging for HIV & AIDS
Conducted by K Niranjan Rao and Naveen Kumar

The workshop helped in enhancing the skills of peer educators in making kites of various colours. Kites apart from being used as a fun sport, have also been used to convey messages. The Peer educators learned how to make the kites as well as exchange ideas on how kites can be used for HIV/AIDS communication.
